Clinton mocks GOP debt clock, previews speech

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former President Bill Clinton gave the crowd at the Westin Hotel a little taste of his Democratic National Convention speech the night before he’s to deliver it, including a piece of the red meat.

“You see that debt clock they had?” the former president asked, referring to the running debt display at last week’s Republican National Convention in Tampa. “They sort of forgot to tell you…” Clinton began, only to be interrupted by a member of the crowd yelling, “they built it.” “Yeah, they built it, that’s what they built,” Clinton said to huge cheers.

The former president said he was surprised that President Obama asked him to make Wednesday night’s big speech. “No president has ever done anything like this, but the person who might otherwise do it has a traveling job and can’t participate in politics anymore and I’m very proud of her,” Clinton explained, giving a hat tip to his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The party for Clinton at the Westin was a “Party Two Decades in the Making” celebrating the 20th anniversary of Clinton’s own nomination and was sponsored by the Arkansas Democratic Party. Clinton was introduced by a trio of celebrities — Adrian Grenier, Will.I.Am and Ashley Judd. “Thank you for getting me out of this little room where I’m laboring on this little talk I have to give tomorrow,” he told partygoers.
