Clooney agrees with Bernie backers: Fundraisers are ‘obscene’ and he ‘sucked’ as Batman

George Clooney said Sunday that he could not quibble with a Bernie Sanders supporter who told him during a protest: “You sucked as Batman.”

“I said, ‘Well, you sort of got me on that one,'” the actor said in an interview aired Sunday on “Meet the Press.”

Clooney co-chaired a fundraiser Friday for Hillary Clinton in San Francisco. Two tickets at a table with George Clooney, his wife Amal and Clinton cost $353,400 in donations. At another fundraiser Saturday in Los Angeles, Sanders supporters showered Clinton’s motorcade with $1 bills.

Clooney was photographed in an exchange with a protestor. Clooney said Sunday he that rejected the man’s claim that he is a “corporate shill,” but could not argue with the protestor’s attack on his work as Batman.

Clooney told “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd that he agrees with Sanders that fundraisers he is participating in are “obscene.”

“They’re right to protest,” Clooney said. “They’re absolutely right. It’s an obscene amount of money.”

But the actor said he is supporting Clinton and other Democrats in part to reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United that forces Democrats to hold such events to compete.

“The Sanders campaign, when they talk about it, is absolutely right,” Clooney said. “It’s ridiculous that we should have this kind of money in politics. I agree completely.”

But he noted that most of the money raised goes to other Democrats. Clooney said the effort can help Democrats win back a Senate majority, allowing confirmation of a Supreme Court justice who could help reverse Citizens United.

Clooney also recalled meeting Donald Trump. Clooney said he was seated and was therefore surprised when Trump later said he found Clooney to be short.

Clooney added that he believes Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, have made the Republican nominating contest “a campaign of fear.”

“We are not a country that is afraid,” Clooney said. “I refuse to accept that.”
