Booker donated $440,000 to charity in 2013

Sen. Cory Booker donated $440,000 to charity last year, more than 80 percent of his income.

The New Jersey Democrat made more approximately $541,000 in 2013 — mostly from speaking fees — but he donated more than $440,000 of it in cash, property and stock to charity, according to new tax returns released by his campaign.

Booker’s income also came from $114,000 for serving as mayor of Newark for most of the year, in addition to $29,000 for his time as senator.

Recipients of his donations include churches, schools, as food bank, the Dominican Parade and American Cancer Society, according to NBC New York.

Booker’s campaign is now challenging his opponent, Republican Jeff Bell, to release 16 years’ worth of returns — the amount Booker has released.

A RealClearPolitics average of polls shows Booker has a healthy 12.8 percentage point lead over Bell.
