An election day hangover for GOP lobbyist

Bet on Barack

There were a lot of Republicans in Washington trying to save face on the day after Election Day, when the GOP took a serious bruising.

But for Rob Tappan, who served as President Bush’s principal deputy assistant secretary of State for public affairs from 2002 to 2006, walking around town proved especially embarrassing.

See, Tappan, who is now president of Weber Merritt Public Affairs, had made a bet with three Democrats in his office: If McCain won, the Dems would have to wear a McCain/Palin shirt the next day and if Obama won, Tappan would have to walk around with an Obama/Biden t-shirt.

Well, we all know how the election turned out, so you may have spotted Tappan at The Palm on the day after Obama’s victory, sporting an Obama/Biden shirt … much to his chagrin. He did try to save some face by slapping a “I Lost A Bet” sticker on the shirt. Even columnist Mark Shields got a good chuckle out of Tappan’s misfortunes while dining at the 19th Street power spot.

“There but for the grace of God, they would have been wearing McCain/Palin t-shirts had the results been different,” Tappan told us.
