A soldier fighting in Afghanistan died from an enemy attack this weekend, the Pentagon announced Sunday.
Master Sgt. Peter McKenna died on Saturday in Kabul, Afghanistan, from enemy small arms fire. The 35-year-old Rhode Island native was serving in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, the name for the U.S. ongoing mission in Afghanistan.
He had served for 17 years, including five tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., tweeted Sunday morning.
McKenna was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.
Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., tweeted that he joined all Rhode Island residents in mourning McKenna, who he called “a truly great citizen, soldier, person and patriot.”
