A poll sponsored by a labor union showed a tighter-than-expected margin for Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican who is one of the biggest immigration hawks in Congress.
Conducted by AFL-CIO affiliate United Transportation Union, the poll focused primarily on whether or not voters in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District want passenger rail.
But it also found that 46 percent would back King while 43 percent support his Democratic opponent, Jim Mowrer. That put King’s lead within the 5.1 percentage point margin of error.
Like most House members, especially Republicans this year, King will likely be re-elected without trouble. But given how few public polls are released within congressional districts, the results are interesting.
The poll of 450 residents was conducted by cellphone and landline from Sept. 20-Sept. 23. Questions about elections were only directed to 375 respondents who identified themselves as very likely or certain to vote.
