Police in Ferguson, Mo., have arrested a man and charged him with shooting two police officers last week.
Prosecutor Bob McCulloch said the man was one of the demonstrators who had gathered on the street to protest police treatment of black residents. The man said he had a dispute with people other than the police officers, but McCulloch said it’s not clear whether he was shooting at people other than the police.
“We are not 100 percent [certain] there was a dispute,” McCulloch said. “That’s something that is being investigated right now.”
Jeffery Williams, age 20, a resident of the Ferguson area, has been charged with first-degree assault, McCulloch said.
The two officers survived the shooting and have been released from the hospital.
McCulloch said police were tipped off by the public about Williams, who has been part of the Ferguson protests on multiple occasions.
