Secretary of State John Kerry thanked Germany on Wednesday for helping apprehend three American teenage girls who planned on joining Islamic militants in the Middle East.
“We are very, very grateful for Germany for their cooperation with us on this particular incident of young folks who were traveling,” Kerry told a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday, according to NBC News.
The girls, two sisters aged 17 and 15, and another 16-year-old, flew back to their respective homes in Denver voluntarily after being stopped at Frankfurt Airport. The three were intending to go to Syria to join up with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or another Islamic group, officials said.
The investigation of the girls is ongoing, Kerry said.
