Marion Barry, Twitter statesman

Marion Barry, D.C. Councilmember and “mayor for life,” displayed some real statesmanship on Twitter over the weekend, engaging Federal City Council CEO John Hill for a nuanced, civil conversation.

After Hill called Barry “disingenuous at best” for his attack on political opponent Jacque Patterson, Barry tweeted, “Can you say it a louder John? So everyone can see that you can LOUD AND WRONG at the same time. #stuckonstupid.”

After Hill replied that he would never call Barry stupid and that “I am stuck on courtesy,” Barry peppered Hill with a series of tweets on the definition of courtesy and issued demands for an apology, to which Hill did not reply. “Just like I thought,” Barry said. “Cricket sounds. Courtesy is as courtesy does.”

The Ward 8 councilmember, who is up for reelection, urged followers to vote in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, April 2. The primary is, in fact, on Tuesday, April 3.
