A family member of the recently deceased infant deemed “Bernie Baby,” photographed with Sen. Bernie Sanders at a campaign rally, has set up a Go Fund Me page to raise wake, funeral and burial expenses for the family.
Since the crowdfunding page was created Sunday for the four-month-old’s expenses, more than $25,000 in donations from 500 people have poured in, surpassing the family’s requested $16,000 in financial support.
Oliver Jack Carter Lomas gained internet fame after his mother, Susan, took him to see the Democratic presidential candidate at a Las Vegas rally. Susan styled him in a Bernie-like look with a white-haired wig ang black-rim glasses, similar to the 74-year-old Vermont senator’s appearance.
Pictures of Oliver and the candidate went viral. But tragedy struck the family not long after. Oliver died Feb. 25 due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, the leading cause of death in infants one to 12 months old.
A spokesman for Sanders called the boy’s death “very sad news.”
