Carney: Obama signaling support for Clinton

Former White House press secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday that President Obama likely would support Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee over Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-declared Democratic socialist.

“I think the president has signaled, while remaining neutral, that he supports Clinton’s candidacy and would prefer to see her as the nominee,” the former Obama spokesman told CNN following the president’s speech in Springfield, Ill., about the state of politics in America.

According to Carney, Obama would not officially embrace the former secretary of state unless she wins the nomination, but added he had no doubts that the president wants Clinton to win because she “would be the most effective in carrying forward what he’s achieved.”

In the Democratic primary Tuesday night, Sanders won 70 percent of New Hampshire voters who identified as independents, while Clinton drew Democratic supporters who supported more classic liberal views.
