Pelosi praises coalition strikes against Islamic State

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised President Obama for building a coalition of Arab nations to attack the Islamic State in Syria Monday night.

“With the world uniting to confront the brutality of [the Islamic State], we will disrupt, degrade and destroy this threat to global security and stability,” the California Democrat said. “There will be no safe haven for [the Islamic State’s] finances, facilities or fighters.”

Pelosi is among a faction of lawmakers who believes Obama is authorized to conduct the airstrikes under military authorization measures approved by Congress in 2001 and 2002. Other lawmakers say they believe Congress should be debating broader measures to green light the latest airstrikes as well as future military actions.

“Congress appreciates the ongoing consultations and briefings from the Administration on our efforts against [Islamic State] and other terrorist groups,” Pelosi added in her statement.
