Illinois governor latest to attack Chicago mayor

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) is the latest person to criticize Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) for how his administration has handled controversial police shootings.

Rauner said Wednesday that Emanuel’s refusal to recommend the Justice Department expand its investigation to include the city’s law department indicated the mayor was “out of touch,” according to a news report.

Emanuel, former chief of staff to President Obama, defended himself, saying only the federal government has a say over the city departments it chooses to investigate.

“While we don’t control or direct what the Department of Justice looks into, the Mayor has been clear that his administration will fully cooperate with whatever investigations they choose to undertake,” said Lauren Huffman, spokeswoman to the mayor.

The calls for an even broader investigation came Tuesday after the city’s legal department admitted its lead attorney Jordan Marsh had intentionally hidden evidence related to a police shooting in order to help the city’s case.
