Reporter misquotes Trump on ‘Brexit’ answer

A British-based reporter on Friday misquoted Donald Trump when the would-be Republican nominee offered an answer related to the United Kingdom’s surprise departure from the European Union.

During a press conference at a golf course that Trump owns in Scotland, Connor Gillies, a reporter for the British radio station LBC, asked Trump if he would “back” British politican Boris Johnson as the U.K.’s next prime minister.

“I don’t know him,” said Trump of Boris, who was a supporter of the Britain leaving the EU. “I’m sure he’ll be good. He got it right so that gives him an advantage but I don’t know him.”

Gillies, however, incorrectly transcribed Trump’s quote on Twitter in a way that suggested Trump was unfamiliar with the politician.

“Just asked Donald Trump if he thinks Boris Johnson should be the next [prime minister] following ‘Brexit.’ He told me, ‘Who is Boris? I don’t know him.'”

Trump never actually said, “Who is Boris?” Yet the quote was widely disseminated and mocked on Twitter.
