Behind the headlines: ‘Law and Order’ stars in town to speak out against child abuse

Law and Order: SVU” dramatizes child abuse during many of the episodes, but actors B.D. Wong and Tamara Tunie want people to see the true life issue behind the hit series.

“We are always told and taught and encouraged to remember that these cases are from real life cases,” Wong said on Capitol Hill Wednesday. “I always remember for every victim, there’s actually a real person out there, or thousands, that this particular thing might have happened to.”

Tunie believes the social programs geared toward preventing and educating people about child abuse need more government funding.

“It always comes down to money, doesn’t it?” Tunie said. “But, I think it’s all of our responsibilities to take care of America’s kids.”
