President Obama tweeted Wednesday his desire for keeping Scotland in the United Kingdom.
The tweeted signed “-bo” — meaning it was typed directly by the president — came a day prior to the Scottish independence vote on Thursday.
Obama said he hopes the UK remains “strong, robust and united,” noting how important it is as a partner for the United States and a “force for good in an unstable world.”
President Obama first commented on the Scottish independence vote in June after the G7 summit, saying, “We obviously have a deep interest in making sure that one of the closest allies that we will ever have remains strong, robust, united, and an effective partner.”
But, like some lawmakers, the administration has mostly stayed on the sidelines of the contentious issue. While not changing policy much, the timing of the tweet was a more bold step for the administration.
