Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton Sunday seemed amused and unconcerned when shown clips of Republican rivals Jeb Bush and Donald Trump, prompting host George Stephanopoulos to at one point to interject, “You’re laughing again.”
“I’m sorry, I can’t help it,” Clinton replied.
The videos of comments that prompted that prompted Clinton’s chuckles were first from Bush and then from Trump.
“I think you’re looking at the next Republican nominee. And here’s what I promise to you: Should I win this nomination, I will take it to Hillary Clinton, and I will whoop her,” Bush said at Friday’s Republican Jewish Coalition summit.
“She’ll do a couple minutes in Iowa, maybe a short period of time. And then she goes home, you don’t see her for five, six days. She goes home, she goes to sleep. I’m telling you, she doesn’t have the strength, she doesn’t have the stamina,” Trump said at a rally.
“Well, who can agree with anything he says? That is, you know, subject to one second of a fact-checking,” Clinton said of Trump. “If he gets the nomination, I would be more than happy to campaign against him.”
Clinton attributed Trump’s success to his celebrity. “Because he’s a reality TV star,” Clinton said. “Tens of millions of people have watched him for more than a decade on TV. He’s part of the celebrity culture.
“He’ll say whatever he wants to say. and I think that, you know, there’s a certain attractiveness to people that here’s a guy who says exactly what he believes — untrue as it may be, inflammatory as it certainly is.”
