A good week equals good poll numbers for President Obama.
Roughly 50 percent of Americans approve of President Obama for the first time in about two years, according to a new CNN/ORC poll. Forty-seven percent expressed disapproval.
The boost in popularity can be attributed to his recent handling of race relations and the economy. In May, only 45 percent approved of the job Obama was doing as president, while 52 percent disapproved.
Approval among blacks was especially pronounced: 91 percent expressed approval of Obama in the poll, which was done after his response to the killing of nine African-American churchgoers in South Carolina. Overall, 55 percent of Americans of all races expressed approval of Obama’s handling of race relations.
Beyond specific issues, 52 percent of those polled approved of Obama’s handling of the economy — the highest result since 2009.
The poll of roughly 1,000 U.S. adults was conducted June 26-28 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
