Trump storms Texas determined to beat back Democrats in red state

AUSTIN, Texas — Former President Donald Trump will return to Texas this weekend in the hope of helping the Republican Party tip the scales in their favor in key federal and state races next month.

Conservatives believe Trump stumping for them up and down the ballot could be the boost needed to keep the state red.

Trump is expected to address several thousand attendees in Robstown, just outside the Gulf Coast city of Corpus Christi, at 7 p.m. local time Saturday. Five politicians and immigration officials from his administration will be on deck, warming up the crowd for three hours before his arrival.

Guests include Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan, and National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd.

“I have a great relationship with the president. I appreciate what he’s done,” Paxton told the Washington Examiner in an interview Thursday. “I’m always proud and happy to be with him when he’s in Texas or really anywhere else.”

Trump’s appearance is significant, particularly in South Texas, where he picked up votes from the 2016 election to the 2020 election. In an email this week, his campaign touted his 33-0 record endorsing Texans.

In the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, three Latinas have won the Republican nomination and are in tight races against Democrats who have controlled each of those districts for more than a century.

The “Triple Threat” — Rep. Mayra Flores of the 34th Congressional District, Monica De La Cruz of the 15th, and Cassy Garcia of the 28th — have copied Trump and said they are winning over Hispanic Democrats who are turned off by how progressive liberals have become.

Trump has endorsed De La Cruz, whose campaign did not return a request for comment on whether she will be in attendance. Garcia and Flores also did not respond to requests for comment.

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) will be absent due to a prescheduled fundraising trip to Florida.

Trump’s appearance in Texas will also test the waters for a 2024 presidential run, which could pit him against Abbott.
