Parties before the party

While Saturday night’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner is the main event, Friday night saw its fair share of hot, happening parties all over town.

First up was The Creative Coalition/Capitol File screening party of Barry Levinson’s “PoliWood” at the Naval Heritage Museum.

The Coalition’s Tim Daly, Matthew Modine, Dana Delany, Matthew Settle and Rachel Leigh Cook were all on hand to take questions from the audience following the film about the importance of the arts.  Not sure how much of the film Modine saw, though.  We spotted the “Full Metal Jacket” star channeling his wartime character, playing SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs on the Play Station 2 outside the theater.

We again spotted Settle and Cook later on at FunnyOrDie.com’s “First Amendment” party at the member-only club L2 in Georgetown.

Further proof that Hollywood and Obama aides are a natural fit was Jon Favreau and Rashida Jones’ night-long interaction.  Leaving us question whether they are just good friends or a match made in PoliWood heaven, the Obama speechwriter and the actress arrived together (just as Kevin Bacon was leaving with his daughter) and spent the entire night cozied up a couch.

They held rank as they were joined on and off during the night by actors John Hamm, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer WestfeldtMegan McCain also stopped in for a drink, but kept her distance from the crew.

Some of our favorite parts of the night included “Mad Men’s” Hamm explaining how “similar” advertising agencies are to political campaigns, Georgetown alum Cooper recalling his days as a waiter at what is now Neyla and Favreau saracastically thanking us for publishing our story on his cellphone number appearing in a Washington Post photo.  “I had like 5,000 calls that night, thanks for the pain in the a–.”

Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden was set to be the “celebrity DJ” but was still a no show as the party started to die down.

And just up the street at another Georgetown hotspot (perhaps a more classic one), Café Milano, Mike Myers and Owen Wilson were spotted dining.
