Donald Trump won’t attend this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, although not for a lack of invitations.
“I was asked by every single group of media available to mankind [to attend this year]. But I’ve decided not to go. Do you know why? I would have a good time and the press would say I look like I wasn’t having a good time,” the Republican presidential front-runner said in an interview with The Hill.
Trump attended the dinner in 2011, and was the butt of many of President Obama’s jokes in his speech, and again last year.
The dinner is dubbed “Nerd Prom” and takes place at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
“I had a great time,” Trump said of the 2011 dinner, despite the jokes. “I was very honored by all of the attention. The president told joke after joke and it was good. They were all very nice and delivered nicely and I had a great time and told the press. For four years, I’ve read what a miserable time I had.”
He added, “The press is dishonest. If the press would be honest, I’d go because I’d have a good time. … But no matter how good a time I had, the press would say, ‘Donald Trump was miserable.’ What would I need that for?”
During the 2011 dinner, Trump sat stone-faced during a roast by comedian Seth Meyers.
This year’s dinner is April 30, four days before Indiana’s GOP presidential primary.
