Supreme Court justices: discreet Nats fans

The Washington Nationals have drawn support this year from a very high court — the Supreme Court justices have become regular attendees, according to Gregory McCarthy, the team’s vice president for government and municipal affairs.

“We’ve had five [attend] this year,” McCarthy told Yeas & Nays, including Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who had a special audience with the Yankees during batting practice. “She’s a Yankees fan,” McCarthy said. “She’s been here more than once.”

“They of course come with a security entourage,” he said, adding that the stadium has become “very adept” at moving the justices safely and discreetly in and out of the stadium. They seem to enjoy the baseball in relative anonymity, perhaps due to the lack of long black robes. “The fans may or may not even know they’re there,” McCarthy said.

Other Nats fan have not been quite as anonymous — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, for example, who has been an outspoken fan of fellow Nevadan Bryce Harper. Another uncloseted Harper fanatic: AFL-CIO chief Richard Trumpka, who told reporters on Thursday that he’s a huge fan of both the rookie and the Nats.
