First lady Michelle Obama will christen the PCU Illinois, the U.S. Navy’s newest submarine Saturday morning in Groton, Conn.
Obama is visiting as part of the Joining Forces initiative and is the ship’s sponsor. She previously participated in the keel laying in May, 2014.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 12:15 p.m. While only those who are invited may attend the ceremony, a live feed is available here.
The Illinois is the Navy’s newest and most advanced nuclear attack submarine, according to a press release from General Dynamics. The submarine is the 13th ship of the Virginia class, designed for the post-Cold War era to be unobtrusive and connected with sophisticated land, air, sea and space-based assets around the globe.
