Republican front-runner Donald Trump has a big lead heading into his home state of New York’s GOP presidential primary while his rival, Ted Cruz, has an edge in Wisconsin, a new poll found.
A CBS News-YouGov poll released Sunday shows that GOP voters are split in New York and Wisconsin for two big primaries in April.
Cruz edges Trump 43-37 percent among registered voters in Wisconsin, according to the poll. John Kasich is in a distant third with 18 percent.
In New York, where Trump has a home-state advantage, the billionaire has a commanding lead. He polls at 52 percent, 31 points ahead of Cruz. Due to the way New York awards delegates, Trump advantage gives him a chance to win all of the state’s 95 delegates. That would be a big step toward the 1,237 delegates Trump hopes to secure to avoid a contested convention.
Cruz is effectively tied in New York with Kasich, 21-20 percent.
The Wisconsin primary takes place April 5. New York’s is on April 19.
