Secretary of State John Kerry brought an unexpected friend to Paris on Friday.
Kerry met Friday with French President Francois Hollande and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to show solidarity and support in the wake of last week’s terrorist attacks — but he wasn’t alone.
He brought along his personal friend, the singer/songwriter James Taylor, to sing a rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend” to the crowd as a tribute to victims of the attacks that claimed 17 lives.
Before playing the song on his guitar, Taylor finger-picked the melody of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem.
The trip comes after Sunday’s march in Paris to protest terrorism, though the highest-ranking U.S. official in attendance was the Ambassador to France, Jane Hartley.
“My visit to France is basically to share a big hug for Paris and express the affection of the American people for France and for our friends there who have been through a terrible time,” Kerry said before his arrival in Paris.
Friday’s event was called an “Homage de John Kerry a Paris.”
