House Speaker John Boehner called the accused actions of six Baltimore police officers “outrageous” and “unacceptable,” and said he believes the relationship between police and African-Americans has become a national crisis.
Boehner, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” endorsed the use of body cameras by the police and said he doesn’t oppose allowing local law enforcement to use existing federal grants to purchase the equipment.
“I think that if you look at what’s happened over the course of the last year, you’ve just got to scratch your head,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said. “Public servants should not violate the law. If these charges are true, it’s outrageous and it’s unacceptable.”
Boehner also told NBC’s Chuck Todd he’s not endorsing a GOP candidate for the White House but he likes former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as well as Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
“I’m not going to endorse anybody,” Boehner said. “I don’t want to hurt anybody.”
Todd asked Boehner to provide a “word or phrase” to describe top political names, including Hillary Clinton.
Boehner wouldn’t take the bait.
“Listen, I don’t have a word for her,” Boehner said. “Former secretary of state.”
