Texas Sen. Ted Cruz will support Donald Trump if he becomes the GOP nominee, but it appears he won’t be happy about it.
“We need a candidate who can beat Hillary,” Cruz, who trails the real estate developer in most polls as they fight for the Republican presidential nomination, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday.
Cruz’s statement comes amid questions about a pledge Trump and all GOP candidates signed to eventually support whoever gets nominated. A New York Times report Saturday said Senate Republican leaders would encourage senators to run against Trump if he becomes the nominee.
Cruz said he would support any GOP nominee, but said he is worried about what Trump would do if he reaches the White House.
“If Donald becomes president, who the heck knows what he would do,” Cruz said. “The challenges are too great to roll the dice and risk losing the Supreme Court for a generation.”
Earlier on “State of the Union,” Trump said that he felt the GOP is violating the pledge.
“If they want to play that game, I can play it much better than they can,” he said.
