Carson: ‘America will be gone as we know it’ if Trump runs 3rd party

With the first debate behind him, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson said Friday that America “as we know it” will be “gone” if Donald Trump bolts the Republican Party in 2016.

Carson, who made the comments to Fox News Radio’s John Gibson, added that a Trump independent run would “hand the election” to the Democratic Party, which would come with multiple Supreme Court nominations.

“I’m hoping that he will at some point come to an understanding that if he runs as a third-party candidate, he will essentially hand the election to the progressives, who will get two or three Supreme Court picks, and America will be gone as we know it,” Carson said. “I hope he realizes the seriousness of that situation.”

Carson also denied that there was a problem with the opening debate question from Fox News’ Bret Baier, in which he asked if all of the candidates would vow against launching a third party run if they lost in their bid for the GOP nomination. The famed neurosurgeon argued that while the entire format of the debate is unfair in one way or another, you have to expect that.

“It’s an inherently unfair format, but you have to expect that when you go into a debate,” Carson told Gibson.
