Brokaw: ‘Daily Show’ did it best with Herman Cain

From what he said Thursday, it looks like veteran NBC newsman Tom Brokaw is among the throngs of Americans who turn to “The Daily Show” for solid journalism. At an appearance at the National Press Club, Brokaw gave high marks to Jon Stewart and his colleagues for their coverage of GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain.

“Jon’s staff was just so good at this, did the best job I’ve seen all week on the Herman Cain story,” Brokaw acknowledged. “By putting it into perspective, of getting the archival information, of tracking the different things that he said along the way and then putting it in context, as well, some of the defenses of him,” Brokaw continued.

The former “NBC Nightly News” anchor was particularly impressed with the way Stewart swatted down the idea that the Cain sexual harassment claims were simply allegations. “In fact there was a settlement made,” explained Brokaw. “That’s the kind of reporting that we ought to be seeing, frankly, on all the cable outlets and all the traditional news outlets because there wasn’t anything loaded about all that, he was just doing a factual recitation of what had happened.”

Also at the event, Brokaw gave a shout-out to a special guest — CBS News’ Walt Cronkite, grandson of broadcasting legend Walter Cronkite. “It’s grand to have you here,” Brokaw said.
