Liberal New York Times economic columnist Paul Krugman sent out a message Thursday on Twitter appearing to tie the next several presidential primaries to slavery.
“Understanding the next primary,” Krugman’s said in a tweet to his 1.5 million followers. Attached was a graphic that showed several Southern states and their percentage of populations that were made up of slaves in the year 1860. Five of those states hold their primaries on Super Tuesday, and all occur in the next several weeks.

While Krugman appeared to be implying that the percentage of slaves in those states will have some bearing on the outcome of the primaries, he didn’t offer any more detailed explanation. Krugman did not return a request for comment from the Washington Examiner media desk.
The South Carolina Republican primary contest is on Saturday.
