Donald Trump won the Michigan primary.
In the days leading up to the Great Lakes State’s primary, Trump appealed to voters who failed to find any relief from the poor economy. He specifically targeted those in the state’s automotive industry and promised to prevent businesses from moving their production operations.
Trump’s victory dealt a crushing blow to Ohio Gov. John Kasich who has made Midwestern voters a central part of his plan to win the Republican presidential nomination. Kasich won the qualified support of the Free Press, the state’s largest newspaper, which disputed some of Trump’s plans as “flatly incorrect.” But voters did not seem to mind.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had also hoped to perform well, having gained some ground in recent polling of the state. But the Trump train rolled right over Cruz.
Following Tuesday’s results the Republican candidates will shift their attention to next week’s winner-take-all nominating contests. Primaries in Florida and Ohio could represent a last stand for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Kasich.
