Ted Cruz brushed off accusations that he wouldn’t work with Democrats as president, saying Sunday that he would even be able to work with Nancy Pelosi, the liberal House Minority Leader.
“Are you and Nancy Pelosi going to be able to get stuff done?” “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd asked the Texas Republican in an interview aired Sunday.
“Absolutely,” the Texas Republican responded, dismissing the suggestion raised by his rival Donald Trump that only Trump had the ability to cut deals with Democrats.
Cruz’s response came just hours after he released a web video, titled “No More Deals,” which faulted Trump and Marco Rubio ifor working on deals with Democrats. The video includes footage, intended to reflect poorly on Trump, in which the real estate developer says “I’m gonna be able to get along with Nancy Pelosi.”
The video shows the words: “America doesn’t need a deal maker,” and concludes by displaying the line: “Ted Cruz will never make a deal.”
“My entire time in the Senate, I have treated every member of the Senate with civility and respect,” Cruz told Todd on Sunday.
Cruz, positioned near the top of polling for the Iowa caucuses Monday night, explained that he hoped to affect change by building a groundswell of like-minded voters.
“Why was Reagan able to change the country?” he asked rhetorically. “Because he built a grassroots movement, the Reagan revolution, that turned this country around.”
