Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has not formally declared his run for presidency, but he told Bloomberg Politics that he may be interested in Sen. Marco Rubio as his running mate.
Walker is not expected to announce his candidacy until the beginning of July, after he completes work on Wisconsin’s two-year budget. He said many people have discussed a Walker-Rubio campaign with him, perhaps even before next year’s Iowa caucus, as a way to differentiate themselves, Bloomberg Politics reported.
“For now, you know, Marco is a quality candidate,” Walker told Bloomberg Politics. “He’s going to be formidable in this race as things progress. And if we were to get in, we’d be as well, and we’ll see where things take us.”
Bloomberg Politics reported that those who have spoken to Walker about getting Rubio on his ticket were surprised by his sincere consideration. It would have been more typical for a candidate such as Walker to dismiss the notion, Bloomberg Politics reported.
“We’d just probably have to arm-wrestle over who would be at the top of the ticket,” Walker said, according to Bloomberg Politics.
Walker said Rubio stands out, despite his preference toward governors with executive experience to senators with legislative experience for vice president, Bloomberg Politics reported.
“I do like Marco Rubio,” he said. “I think he and I have similar thoughts on national defense and foreign policy.”
