Roughly 160 women and children believed to have been abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria have been rescued.
“We are still working to verify the actual number of the rescued hostages, but I can say they include around 60 women and 100 children,” army spokesman Sani Usman said.
A female hostage and a soldier were killed during the rescue operation at Sambisa Forest. Nigerian troops have raided and destroyed nine Boko Haram camps in the forrest in recent weeks, where the extremist group operates from, the spokesman said.
The rescue by the Nigerian army follows the Tuesday rescue of 200 girls and 93 women, the military said Thursday.
Officials are still trying to identify if the 200 girls saved Tuesday are the Chibok girls abducted last April — a kidnapping that sparked the social media movement #BringBackOurGirls.
“Many of those kidnapped have undergone psychological trauma and indoctrination,” he said.
More than 2,000 women and girls have been abducted by Boko Haram since last year, according to Amnesty International.
