The race for California superintendent of public instruction is a hot one this year, with the top two candidates raising cash in the $1 million range.
VotersEdge, a project of the nonpartisan MapLight, has the fundraising breakdown data as of May 14.
Incumbent Tom Torlakson has raised $1.3 million, a large chunk of that from labor unions, including $58,000 from the American Federation of Teachers.
His chief competitor, education reform advocate Marshall Tuck, has raised $994,000, including a $15,000 donation from the Broad Foundation.
In third place is teacher Lydia Gutierrez, who is her own top contributor, having donated $13,000 to her own campaign.
The statewide primary is June 3.
