CNN has canceled John King‘s D.C.-based 6 p.m. show “John King, USA” the cable news network announced Wednesday. King will be thrown out in to the field as the 2012 election heats up as the lead national campaign correspondent.
First reported by the New York Times, King’s show will air until June 29 and then another hour of “The Situation Room” will be added, leaving Wolf Blitzer to reign as king of the network for three hours each weekday. The note, sent out by CNN executive Ken Jautz Wednesday morning, made no mention of a “cancelation,” instead positing the move as a way to bolster CNN’s political coverage. “This is John’s seventh presidential campaign, fourth with CNN, and making him available across our programming lineup allows us to better tap his skills and experience, especially on the ground reporting in major battleground states and amont critical voting blocs,” Jauntz wrote.

A CNN spokeswoman also touted this change as an opportunity to use King better. “It is gearing up to be a very exciting and close election, and we want the best reporter in the field,” she said. “This election cycle is perfect for John King.”
