Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby appeared happy to talk with reporters Wednesday about how she’s arrested and charged violent criminals in her six months’ time as a prosecutor, but when confronted on her apparently-rocky relationship with Baltimore city police, she turned frustrated and defensive.
“Rank and file cops have said that you don’t have their back. What would you like to say to them?” Fox News reporter Griff Jenkins asked Mosby in an off-guard moment at the end of her press conference Wednesday.
“I’m not going to comment on that,” Mosby responded shortly, before proceeding to comment. “I come from five generations of police officers. That’s absurd. Of course I have – I work with the police department. We rely on the police department to get these violent repeat offenders off of our streets. That’s absurd.”
Mosby’s statement at the announcement of charges against the officers involved in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray on May 1 has been criticized as being too political and having anti-cop bias:
“To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America: I heard your call for ‘No justice, no peace.’ Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man.
“To those that are angry, hurt or have their own experiences of injustice at the hands of police officers I urge you to channel that energy peacefully as we prosecute this case. I have heard your calls for ‘No justice, no peace,’ however your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of Freddie Gray.”
“There have been calls on your recusal. Have you given any thoughts to recusal?” Jenkins asked Mosby as she walked away without answering.
Mosby is seeking a protective order to block the release of Freddie Gray’s autopsy report and other “sensitive” documents related to the investigation of six Baltimore police officers allegedly responsible for Gray’s death, Washington Examiner previously reported.
The above clip aired on Greta van Susteren’s Fox News show “On the Record.” Former prosecutor and Fox contributor Katie Phang commented that “When [Mosby’s] asked a question that’s self-serving and when she can self-promote, she has no hesitation, basically, running her mouth. And what’s interesting is when she says ‘I’m not going to comment,’ instead of sticking with that idea … she kept on commenting!”
“She certainly will take credit for the arrests that were made … but she sure doesn’t seem to want to talk about her relationship with the police,” said host Greta van Susteren, before suggesting that Mosby might be “just way over her head … obviously, she injected the politics into this in the beginning, and she’s been very clumsy, but it’s almost like she’s over her head.”
