No, ‘Veep’ will not be a Sarah Palin parody

It’s actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus who’s gracing the cover of the holiday issue of local glossy Capitol File. And she’s shedding some light on her new project “Veep,” the HBO production that has been filming sporadically in the area and chronicles the shenanigans of a Senator from Maryland turned Vice President of the United States named Selina Meyer.

“This is in no way a parody of [Sarah Palin] or any other female politician,” Louis-Dreyfus made a point to say. Palin and Louis-Dreyfus do have a striking physical similarity, the author points out, and notes that Louis-Dreyfus is active on environmental issues in California and supported President Obama in 2008. So then Louis-Dreyfus’ “Veep” is a Democrat, yes?

Actually no. “You will never know what party she’s in,” Louis Dreyfus said. “There’s talk of the opposition and that party and this party, but it is never identified…we poke fun at it all, all politicians, and the way Washington is run.”

The Emmy Award-winning actress hopes the show will attract a broad base of support, once it begins airing next year. “”Yeah, let me put it this way, we think it’s really f—ing funny,” she told Capitol File. “We can’t sit through scenes sometimes for quite awhile because it’s making us laugh so hard. It’s going to be unbelievably raunchy and funny.”

Louis-Dreyfus was picked for cover girl in part because of her role on “Veep,” but she actually has Washington roots too. She moved to the District in elementary school and lived in the area until her high school graduation from the Holton-Arms school in Bethesda.

“It’s so funny, that it’s almost full circle that we’re shooting a show and driving around in the vice presidential motorcade in my hometown, it’s really surreal,” she said. “So it’s nice to return as an adult to Washington and it’s environs. You can really take in the fabulousness of this area.”
