Flip-flop flap
In the summer of 2005, the champion Northwestern University’s women’s lacrosse team created a mini-flap when they wore flip-flops to the White House for their congratulatory visit with President Bush.
It was back to the scene of the fashion crime on Wednesday, as the team was back to celebrate another NCAA title. And the president couldn’t let it go. “I must tell you, I was slightly disappointed when I came in the White House room there and looked at the feet of those women,” he said. “I was looking for flip-flops.”
After visiting with the college football and basketball champs earlier this year, Wednesday was the day for the “non-revenue” sports at the White House — swimming and diving, track and field, rowing, even shooting.
President Bush gave special recognition to the University of Alaska Fairbanks rifle team, which won its 10th title. “I asked the captain, ‘Who did you beat to get here?'” said Bush. “And he said, ‘Army.’ The folks at West Point need to practice.”
