Clinton closes the gap against Sanders in N.H.

A new poll shows that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is narrowing Sen. Bernie Sanders’ lead in the Democratic presidential contest in New Hampshire, with two months to go before the Granite State holds its primary.

Sanders, from neighboring Vermont, still leads Clinton in New Hampshire 50-40, according to a new CNN/WMUR poll. But that 10-point lead is smaller than the 16-point lead he had in September.

In the September poll, Sanders led 46-30, at a time when Vice President Joe Biden was still thinking about entering the race. Biden’s exit helped both Sanders and Clinton, but it helped Clinton more, as she jumped 10 points, and Sanders jumped 4.

Only 1 percent of those asked backed former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley in the latest poll.

Although Sanders has always had more New Hampshire voters than Clinton in the quarterly poll, national surveys indicate a preference for Clinton.

Among New Hampshire Democrats, 59 percent of Democratic primary voters believe Clinton will win the primary. That figure is up from 42 percent in September, when Clinton was tied with Sanders, who has since gone down to 28 percent.

The New Hampshire primaries are the first in the country, and will take place in February.
