Ouch: Obama forgets O’Malley’s name

Ouch.

President Obama called Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, by the wrong first name on Monday during an event at the White House.

“Jack O’Malley? Where’s Jack?” Obama asked about five dozen governors gathered in the State Dining Room for the National Governors Association winter meeting. Obama looked left, then right, and left again. After a short — and painfully awkward — pause, Obama corrected himself.

“Ah, ah, not — Martin. Where’s Martin? Sorry,” Obama said, stumbling over his words.

Obama went on to commend O’Malley for his work in keeping Maryland tuition rates down.

The president stumbled over O’Malley’s name after he spent the previous evening seated next to the Maryland governor’s wife, Catherine, at the 2012 Governors Dinner at the White House.
