Why Jon Stewart thanked George W. Bush for surviving two terms in office

Jon Stewart offered former President George W. Bush a rare thank you on Monday.

After playing clips of former Vice President Dick Cheney defending some of the extreme interrogation techniques used by the CIA when he and president Bush were in office, the host of “The Daily Show” sent a thank you Bush’s way.

“I’m going to end on a note of gratitude — something I never thought that I would say,” Stewart said on Monday’s show. “George W. Bush, thank you for not dying while you were in office.”

The show then cut to a commercial break, flanked with applause from the audience.

The Senate Intelligence Report released last week reveals the tactics used on terror suspects by the CIA after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The 6,200 page report, a culmination of five and a half years of research and investigations, was released in summary form, detailing “coercive interrogation techniques — in some cases amount to torture,” according to California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
