Report: Lawsuit by the man who shot Gabby Giffords is a hoax

The lawsuit against former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords by the man who shot her — Jared Lee Loughner — is a hoax, according to a report.

Federal officials confirmed late Wednesday that “another mentally disturbed prisoner in Philadelphia who is impersonating Loughner” submitted the hoax lawsuit under the man’s name seeking $25 million in damages from Giffords, who Loughner shot in 2011.

Loughner, now 27, is serving seven consecutive life sentences.

The hoax lawsuit was a three-page lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Tucson March 18.

In the lawsuit against Giffords and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the man posing as Loughner had insisted he was innocent since the trial, and now claims he was hand-picked to be an assassin. Also in the lawsuit was an attempt to claim that Giffords is part of the Illuminati and that his head is “full of chips and the evil empire govt is controlling me.”

12 News in Phoenix is working to find the name of the prisoner who sent the lawsuit.
