Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday that though he disagreed with Antonin Scalia on just about everything, the deceased Supreme Court justice was a “brilliant” and “colorful” man.
Asked by “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace whether the Senate should confirm whoever President Obama picks to replace the conservative justice, Sanders replied yes.
“The Senate should confirm someone now,” the Democratic presidential contender said.
“Clearly [Scalia] was a brilliant man, a colorful man,” Sanders added.
Republicans have already vowed not to confirm Obama’s nominee, in hopes that they’ll win the White House in November and are able to appoint a conservative to replace Scalia, one of the most conservative voices on the court.
Wallace also pressed Sanders on whether he would consent to a presidential debate hosted by Fox News, saying both he and his opponent Hillary Clinton have refused the network’s offers so far. Sanders said he would have “no objection” to a debate if he knew the questions and rules ahead of time and felt they were fair.
“If I could have a guarantee and knew what the questions were and the framework of the debate was fair, I would have no objections,” Sanders said.
