Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista got a faceful of glitter at an event in Minneapolis on Tuesday. While at a book signing at a downtown Minneapolis hotel, a gay rights protester threw a box full of colorful confetti on the couple and shouted “Feel the rainbow, Newt! Stop the hate! Stop anti-gay politics!”
Though the protester has not been officially identified, CBS News and the Associated Press are reporting that the man is most likely Nick Espinosa, a prankster who’s disrupted at least two other political events in Minnesota. One was when he dumped a 2,000 pennies in the lap of GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer last year, after which he told reporters he was protesting Emmer’s support for reducing the minimum wage for tipped employees. Espinosa said this latest prank was aprotest against a proposal to amend Minnesota’s Constitution to ban gay marriage.
Newt took the protest gracefully, however. “Nice to live in a free country,” he said, smiling as he brushed the confetti off the table.
