Obama meets Merkel to boost U.S.-European trade

President Obama arrived Sunday in Germany where he is meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel as part of a tour to boost trade with the European Union.

Obama was greeted by Merkel in Hannover at the Schloss Herrenhausen, an historic palace, in the afternoon there.

The president just concluded a visit to Great Britain, where he drew wide attention meeting with the royal family, including a bathrobe-clad Prince George, and drew some controvery by urging the British to remain part of the European Union.

Obama and Merkel shook hands at the airport and Obama kissed each of her cheeks before entering the building for a private meeting, according to pool reports.

In the evening, Obama will deliver remarks at the Hannover Messe Trade Fair Opening Ceremony, a technology and trade fair.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of Germans reportedly gathered to protest Obama’s visit and his promotion of the trans-Atlantic trade deal between Europe and the U.S.
