House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has tapped Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., to head the House Intelligence Committee.
Nunes will replace Rep. Mike Rogers, of Michigan, who is retiring.
Nunes won the job over frontrunners including Rep. Peter King of New York, who formerly headed the Homeland Security Committee, and Jeff Miller of Florida, the current chairman of the Veterans Affairs panel.
Nunes is a long time ally of the GOP leadership who has occasionally been criticized by conservative groups for appearing too moderate on some issues. Nunes was a staunch opponent of the October 2013 strategy to defund the health care law in the government spending bill, which provoked a 16-day government shutdown.
