Clinton: ‘Can I get smiley faces?’

One of the emails from Hillary Clinton’s private server released by the State Department on Friday shows that Clinton in 2012 was very interested in learning how to make smiley faces on her new Blackberry.

In early April of that year, Philippe Reines, her senior advisor, apologized to Clinton for “keeping you waiting.” But Clinton ignored that and got right to what’s on her mind:

“Here’s my question: on this new berry can I get smiley faces?”

Reines explained the smiley face situation in a way that would also give Clinton another chance to reprimand him for being late.

“For email, no, I don’t think so — you need to type them out manually like 🙂 for happy, or :-|| if you want to express anger at my tardiness,” he wrote. He also referred her to a chart, and said some manually typed-in smiley faces “MIGHT automatically convert it into a symbol.”
