The executive editor of the online news site The Daily Beast says anyone who supports any of Donald Trump’s brands is “supporting racism,” and is calling for a boycott of Donald Trump-owned products and real estate.
“Let’s get real: if you’re renting in a Trump building or playing a round of golf at a Trump resort, you are supporting racism and neo-fascism,” Noah Shachtman wrote on Twitter Sunday. “Seems to me it’s time for a boycott of Trump’s businesses — and a public calling out of those who choose to work with him.”
A spokesperson for the Trump campaign did not return a request for comment.
The Daily Beast is widely perceived to be a left-leaning outlet but it is unusual for a top editor of a news publication to wade into politics in such an overt manner.
Shachtman also told his nearly 60,000 Twitter followers, “Today, if you rent a room at a Trump Hotel, you’re making a statement — a choice to be pro-racist, pro-fascist.”
Trump, a billionaire developer and former reality TV celebrity, is leading the Republican field for the party’s presidential nomination in most national and early primary state-level polls. He sits fourth in the Washington Examiner‘s presidential power rankings.
Since his campaign launch in June, Trump has made several controversial statements regarding immigration policy, most recently regarding the U.S. acceptance of refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq, which are under siege by the Islamic terrorist network ISIS.
Trump has said that Muslim religious centers in the U.S. should be monitored for terrorist activity and that the Obama administration should not be allowing refugees from the Middle East into the country.
