Republican Rep. Peter King of New York said on Sunday that his fellow Republicans in Congress who are threatening to shutdown the Department of Homeland Security are “self-righteous and delusional.”
“We’re talking about maybe 40 or 50 people at most, out of a caucus of 247, out of a Congress of 435,” King said on ABC’s “This Week.” “We cannot allow such a small group to be dominating and controlling what happens in the United States Congress, especially at a time when we’re confronting terrorism.”
Some congressional Republicans have said additional funding for Homeland Security should be tied to a bill that also defunds President Obama’s controversial executive actions on immigration policy, which delayed the deportation of many illegal immigrants.
Obama has said he will veto any bill that attempts to defund his actions, which were recently challenged and placed on hold by a federal court ruling.
